dsmISI MAGS for incremental backups of large production file services
Concats’ Partner General Storage has developed an additional dsmISI modul — MAGS “Massive Attack General Storage“ — for TSM environments. It enables incremental backup of large production file services for a wide range of NAS Vendors like EMC, HDS, HP, IBM, NetApp and/or for Windows file servers.

Spectrum Protect (formerly Tivoli Storage Manager, TSM) still is the only software capable of continuously backing up file systems entirely incrementally. With extremely large file systems, containing many millions or even billions of objects, this approach, however, does have its limits. Very often the time used for identifying changed, new or deleted objects alone takes days or even weeks – and thus renders a service level which requires a daily backup cycle which is impossible to achieve. General Storage dsmISI MAGS solves this fundamental problem by accelerating identification of changes and the resulting movement of data by orders of magnitude. Even extremely large and busy file systems can be backed up incrementally within a reasonable timespan using regular Spectrum Protect incremental backup when controlled by dsmISI MAGS.

  • Is easy to install, configure, test and monitor.
  • Is compatible with most file servers and Spectrum Protect client software version 6.3 or later.

  • When backing up scale-out file servers (like EMC Isilon), dsmISI MAGS can automatically utilize all reachable cluster nodes to further accelerate backup.
  • In most cases using dsmISI MAGS doesn’t require additional hardware for Spectrum Protect clients or servers already in use. For optimum performance, MAGS
  • requires correspondingly sized hardware components for file servers, Spectrum Protect client machines and Spectrum Protect servers.
  • Even extremely large and busy file systems can be backed up incrementally within a reasonable timespan using regular Spectrum Protect incremental backup when controlled by dsmISI MAGS.

dsmISI simplifies integration of TSM with OneFS Scale-Out Storage
Concats’ Technology Partner General Storage has enhanced the concept for TSM-as-a-service, based on Isilon/OneFS, adding dsmISI for OneFS. To do so, General Storage has developed the dsmISI module, which simplifies integration of Spectrum Protect (formerly TSM) with scale-out storage environments using Isilon OneFS.

In principle, dsmISI implements dynamic multipathing, which automatically spreads reads and writes symmetrically across all available network paths and Isilon nodes, guaranteeing maximum throughput for any attached Spectrum Protect server. dsmISI is installed on the operating system – such as Linux, Unix or Windows – as a daemon/service and communicates with Isilon clusters, creates NFS/SMB connections to all nodes and presents them to Spectrum Protect servers as a single, very fast file system. dsmISI automatically detects whenever Isilon nodes fail or when nodes are removed from or added to a cluster. Failovers are executed transparently for Spectrum Protect. Dynamic load balancing at runtime ensures that all nodes of a cluster are being utilized equally.

With dsmISI, only one directory has to be configured on the Spectrum Protect servers’ file device classes, while dsmISI communicates with up to
144 Isilon nodes per cluster in the background. This radically simplifies operational concepts for Spectrum Protect.

dsmISI for Database — extremely fast and scalable unlimited Storage for Oracle backups
Concat has enhanced its concept to integrate backup applications in a true scale-out architecture by introducing Database support. For this purpose, Concat Technology partner General Storage has developed the dsmISI for Database module which simplifies the integration of Oracle RMAN in scale-out storage environments with Isilon OneFS.

Backing up Databases is an increasingly challenging prospect for many enterprise IT operations. Ever growing capacities demand increasing throughputs for backup and, especially, recovery. Most traditional, client-server based backup utilities can no longer scale high enough to fulfil these requirements and since all of them have to integrate with a mere subset of possible functions of the data management interfaces provided by the Database (in this case Oracle RMAN), there is little to nothing these backup methods can do to mitigate the problem.

dsmISI for Database is a very simple proposition. Rather than presenting RMAN with a complex API which eliminates some of the more useful features for fast recovery, dsmISI simply connects to EMC’s Isilon scale-out NAS solution.

GSCC for integrating Spectrum Protect clusters
The General Storage Cluster Controller (GSCC) from Concat Technology partner General Storage is a well-established high-availability solution developed specifically for IBM Spectrum Protect (formerly TSM).

GSCC is especially effective when combined with Isilon storage because using DB2’s HADR option enables the construction of maximumavailability Spectrum Protect server environments, without requiring SAN storage or mirroring of Spectrum Protect databases.

Instead of a conventional server cluster, GSCC is an application cluster which is tailored specifically to the requirements of Spectrum Protect servers. As a result of its application-based nature, it not only monitors and circumvents hardware failures, but also functional errors and logical application problems.
